This tour will take you to some of Atlanta’s most atmospheric historical locations. First stop: Oakland Cemetery, scenic resting place of more than 70,000, including Atlanta legends Margaret Mitchell, pro-golfer Bobby Jones, and Atlanta’s first Black mayor, Maynard Jackson. Oakland is noted for the beauty of its trees and garden-like setting, and its impressive monuments and mausoleums.
Next, enjoy lunch at one of Atlanta’s oldest and most-loved “homestyle” restaurants, Mary Mac’s Tea Room. Opened in 1945, Mary Mac’s is the last of 16 such establishments that once dotted the city. Mary Mac’s is famous for its fried chicken, fresh vegetables and daily fresh-baked breads and pastries.
The tour winds up at the Atlanta History Center’s newly restored Cyclorama, one of America’s largest historic treasures. Painted by 17 German artists in 1885, this enormous work of art sought to capture several moments during the Civil War Battle of Atlanta. The story of the work itself, commemorating a Union victory, later altered to project a “win” for the Confederacy, damaged, defaced, and painstakingly restored, is as interesting as the events it depicts!
Cost is $120/person. Transportation, beverage and lunch are included and hosted by the Atlanta Black Tie members.
